Work Parties - Colton Ponds, April 18th, 10am til 2pm… Come help us rebuild some of our ramps and clean things up a bit.  Our work parties on the Clackamas did great things, everything we hoped to accomplish and more.  Thanks to all those who helped, we really appreciate your hard work.

• Spring NewsletterYou should have recieved your spring  newsletter by now, if not give us a call in the office.

• Spring Chinook Clinic - Sat. May 2nd at OFC’s Sandy River site. Hosted by Chris Nordling, topics will include; gear and rigging, techniques, run timing, and a breakdown of the OFC sites.  Make reservations through Chris (info at right).  Cost is $35 (thats cheap!).  Capacity is limited, but we need a minimum of 4 or no clinic.

Rainier Lock We’ve been getting a lot of questions about the lock at our Rainier Lakes gate, so here’s the deal.  The landowner has a logger that works the property named Ron.  When Ron shows up to work everyday he takes the lock with him in his truck and when he leaves he locks it again.

Road ConditionsRoad to the Willamette property is now open, do not park on the grass, stay on the road or you will probably get stuck.  The new road at Hartland Lake is really really soft, especially when it rains.  The roads at Rainier are open but slippery, especially on the way to Middle Lake, the road to the Lower Lake is for 4×4s only

   River Report

• Fish reports on our coastal rivers are great, folks are still catching steelhead left and right, Springers are on the move too.  The photo to the left is of Anthony Blaszak who has gotten really good at taking fish photos.  Our Wilson River site has been fishing really well for native steelhead.  Park in the Sollie Smith parking lot then fish along the gravel bar on the first corner.  Big Creek, an outstanding fishing destination, photo below was sent in by Mike Weinstein…. call Howard Kem to reserve a day at 503-318-4804 or 503-397-0213.  Trask #1  fishes best when the tide is shifting, an incoming tide is m ost productive.  This seems to be true at a lot of places, take a tide chart fishing with you, it’ll help you catch fish. Trask #3: We carved out a new campsite on the river and as it turns out it’s a great place to fish as well. Drift fishing gear and deep swung flies work really well here.  Trask #2: This is a huge property and to fish all  of it might take a whole day. Start out at the “Stone Camp Hole” just below our gate at the upstream end of our site.  This hole is deep.  Fish hide out there and in the next hole downstream.  Nestucca #1: Have you fished the upper end yet? If not you need to. To get there follow the directions in your members book and drive up Evergreen Dr. Be looking on your left for an OFC sign, parking area and cable stairs.  Nestucca #2 is and all around excellent fish producer.  Now is the time to fish for native steelhead, these brutes put up a mean fight.  Make sure you’ve got felt soles because the bedrock down there is really slick.

• The inland rivers are looking good now, our Clackamas site has new trails upstream and downstream.  Good places to find fish are; under the power lines, the slot off our gravel bar downstream, and the high clay bank upstream.  Eagle Creek #1 got much better after the last season of storms.  We now have a gravel island just upstream of the suspension bridge.  Wading to the island is kinda tricky so use your best judgement. Eagle Creek #3: We have a work party scheduled here on May 16th, come help us clear trail 10am til 2pm, it’ll be fun. The Molalla will soon be overrun by native steelhead, they tend to come into the rivers a bit later in April.  Sandy: Chris Nordling has a chinook catching clinic here on May 2nd.  Tony Jacobs sent in the photo to the left of his nice steelhead just above the “Greek Hole.”  North Santiam,  anglers have been catching fish using any method imaginable down there.  The water is still a little high, but the color is beatiful.  Work your way upstream to our island, theres a boulder midstream where fish gather.   The road into the Willamette site is now open,  make sure you park on the road, if you pull into the grass you will get stuck.  Our Washougal site closed March 15th and will reopen in our section on June 15th.

 Stillwater Report

The warm spell we’ve had lately must have made the trout really hungry, folks are catching trout all over the place.  No reports of warm water fish yet…   Rainier Lakes  are all fishing very well, work party sheduled for May 2nd from 10am til 2pm, our roads need to be cleared of brush and downed trees, hope to see you there.  Hartland Lake has finally thawed out and is fishing excellent, try a black wooly bugger.  Winds tend to pick up in the afternoon, so if you plan on fishing from a float tube/pontoon don’t forget your anchor.  Schmadeke is looking good right now.  Trout have been taking midge and chomonid patterns.  Lake Margaret is a great place to take the kids fishing, all sorts of methods work well here; spinners, flies, worms, all good choices (see photo at right).  Colton: Surface rises are common place at these ponds. We’ll be hosting a work party at Colton Ponds on April 18th from 10am til 2pm.  Big & Little Tree Lakes: I fished Little tree last Thursday and got skunked,  we’ve been getting good reports though and I did see a member catch a nice trout on Saturday so maybe it’s just me.  North Santiam Pond:  Fun spot to go spend the afternoon, theres some big trout in this pond & a good number of medium sized ones too.   Marquam Lake: The North West edge of the lake is where the bass have been caught , try slow rolling a spinner bait early in the day and you might find ‘em.  There are plenty of trout availible too.  Remember barbless single hooks only.  Brookside Inn Pond:  The water looks really good here.  We haven’t recieved any fresh reports.  You should go fish it and let us know how you do. Brookside Inn will be hosting a dinner on Sat. May 2nd at 7pm.  Chefs David & Leah McGlade will prepare the feast, cost is $110/person plus gratuity.  Contact Bruce Bandsta at 503-852-4433 to make a reservation.  Highland Ponds:  Shawna Pond looks great right now, just off the point of the island is where we’ve seen the most fish rise lately.  Twin Oaks Pond:  This little pond has been fishing wonderfully lately, another great place for kids, they really like the alpacas & airplanes.  The Sandy Pond still has no fish due to work on the aeration system.
